Valley defeats Chaparral in double overtime

Valley beat Chaparral 32-26 Friday night in what turned out to be an exciting fourth quarter for those in the stands.

“It was a good game. We played our hearts out and came up short,” Chaparral head coach Fernando Carmona said.

Valley was down eight points in the fourth and drove 95 yards for a touchdown, then got a two-point conversion to tie the game and take it into overtime. Chaparral scored first in overtime, but missed the extra point -- then Valley did the same. The second overtime ended when Aniseko Fiatoa got the game-ending sack, but he wasn't the only star of the game.

“Kerwyn Williams, our quarterback, ran wild. He dominated the game,” Valley head coach John Elwell said.

Valley faces Coronado next Friday.

Thomas leads Palo Verde to another win

Palo Verde's Chaz Thomasl rushed for 196 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries Friday night and Tyrone Blake added two touchdown runs to lead the Panthers to a 42-6 victory against Shadow Ridge.

Shadow Ridge scored the game’s first points on a fumble return for a touchdown, but Palo Verde marched the length of the field on the ensuing possession to take the lead for good on a 15-yard touchdown from Blake.

“We were a little sluggish at first,” Palo Verde coach Darwin Rost said.

Thomas scored on a 58-yard run on his first carry of the game, and also scored on runs of 34 and 87 yards. Thomas’ younger brother,Chapelle Thomas, added a 15-yard scoring run.

Palo Verde (7-0, 4-0) played without quarterback Kelly Zurowski and wing back Sidney Hodge, two players Rost said were recovering from minor injuries.

“We wanted to give them an extra week to heal up,” the coach said.

Eldorado defeats Canyon Springs

Eldorado beat Canyon Springs at home, 22-15, on Friday night.

“We just killed ourselves again,” Canyon Springs head coach Chris Littman said. “There was not just one play in particular that went wrong -- just a lot of mental breakdowns.”

Eldorado head coach Leon Evans didn’t think the game was quite the blowout Littman described, adding that quarterback JaQuorrey Williams had a good night and managed the game well.

“It was a close game all the way through,” he said. “It was nip and tuck the whole time.”

Littman credited his running back with helping to keep the game close.

“Curtis Davis had about 100 yards in the second half. He just ran really well,” Littman said.

Clark knocks off Pahrump Valley, 41-14

Broken plays and five fumbles put Pahrump Valley on the losing side of the ball against Clark on Friday night. The final was 41-14.

“Clark played really well. They had this counter-play that got our kids every time,” Pahrump head coach Leo Verzilli said

Clark head coach Don Willis said his team’s offensive line and its two running backs, Andre Clay and Aaron Arlt, played particularly well.

Verzelli said Pahrump's plan is to practice on one aspect in particular.

“We are going back to the drawing board to teach tackling all week," he said.

Cimarron-Memorial gets win over Mojave

Cimarron-Memorial never trailed Friday night against Mojave, eventually winning 33-6.

“We were up 33-nothing at the half. It was pretty routine,” Cimarron-Memorial head coach Rod Vollan said.

Mojave head coach Tyrone K. Armstrong said despite the loss, he saw the team coming together for one of the first times this season.

“We had good tackling, good defense, a lot better team effort this time,” he said. “We made a few mistakes that cost us, but we got on the board during the second half and that was good.”

Armstrong said he’s trying to see the silver lining -- that his team is making strides.

Spring Valley plays by the book to beat Western

Spring Valley said tough practices were the secret to its 47-7 win over Western Friday night.

“We executed right, we did things right,” Spring Valley head coach Kelly Murphy said. “We practiced the way we were going to play.”

Spring Valley faces Pahrump Valley next Friday.
