dnegri -- you were right on the money. It took nance a mere 39 minutes to mischaracterize it as a tax raise. I guess he thinks we need kids without schoolbooks and decent teachers, citizens suffering from disease epidemics, dirty air and water, crowded roads, and too few and too poorly paid public servants to do an adequate job. Sure, Nevada ranks at or near the bottom in one category after another, but nance doesn't want the upper middle class and wealthy fellows to worry about that. They wouldn't want to carry their share of the tax burden, even when they are paying for their entertainment. They often, like nance, want to be nothing more than freeloaders. He is a consistent apologist for their selfcenteredness and cares little if at all about our state.

Wouldn't you know it? It's jfnance32 defending the CEO's and saying that Obama "will throw happy meals at the mobs of citizens." He says that Obama "will increase taxes on job increasing capital investments" and "move money from a productivity pool to a consumption pool." As a prognosticator, he gets an "F". We know that for at least the last three decades, it has been the CEO's and members of the board who have moved money to off shore tax-free accounts and to productivity pools in foreign countries. These traitors have done everything they could think of to avoid paying their fair share of the costs of supporting our forays in Iraq and elsewhere, and supporting our government. They will do whatever they can to avoid paying Americans a fair wage and to avoid paying for the ruin that they have done to our environment. They have done far, far more damage to our country than the worst serial killers. Gutting them or cooking them over a low flame may be too extreme, but drawing and quartering sounds about right.

So much misinformation! The NEI represents taxpayers? Only a fool would agree. The NEI is a private organization that represents those who want to make big bucks off of nuclear energy.

Peterson, just when do you think that politics did not trump science when it came to nuclear energy? When was the first nuclear plant built in this country without public funds and how many were built in that manner? Why do you think we had Three Mile Island and Chernobyl with the subsequent investigations limited by the industry and government? Why are nuclear plants situated on major earthquake fault lines? Why was the "Screw Nevada" bill enacted? The science in the Yucca Mountain project has always been infected with politics. When the potential storage site could not meet the scientific standards, the scientists either changed the standard or falsified the data. So you want to trust the findings of either the NRC or the DOE? I don't think so! It is Nevada's office that was headed by Pete Loux that produced the valid scientific information, not the federal agencies.

Yes, there are both Republicans and Democrats who support and oppose putting nuclear waste in Yucca Mountain. It was a Democrat Louisiana Senator who authored the original "Screw Nevada" bill. Yet, it is the Republicans, those stalwart protectors of states' rights, who continue to support the nuclear industry in droves. It is difficult to find a Republican legislator who is not from Nevada who is not in the pockets of the nuclear industry (e.g., that men's bathroom footsie player from Idaho is one of their strongest supporters). On the other hand, many notable Democrats have supported Nevada in opposing the nuclear waste depository at Yucca Mountain.

And jfnance32, it is clear from your posts that you are at least as interested in opposing Obama as you are in promoting the nuclear repository. You might also read the other posts a bit more attentively (I wouldn't want to accuse you of intentionally misrepresenting what others have said). Gordon has not said that the Democratic Party is against Nevada. It is you who is against Nevada (and the entire country, for that matter). Come to think of it, you probably did intentionally misrepresent what Gordon said. It would be par for the course.

Left unsaid by the LV Sun is the likelihood that Future2012 and jfinance32, if not the same person, are in all probability paid hacks and corrupt bureaucrats for the nuclear power industry, and further that they hope to profit big time by the public financing of nuclear power.

Left unsaid by the LV Sun is the fact that Pete Loux successfully kept the nuclear power industry at bay for more than twenty years, and that the State would have been far better off retaining him while dumping Governor Gibbons.

Left unsaid by the LV Sun is the fact that wind, solar, and geothermal energy do not produce greenhouse gases, nor the dangers of nuclear energy. Moreover, the same amount of money that the proponents of nuclear energy want for their efforts, will not only produce safer renewable energy but will likely produce it quicker than nuclear energy would come on line.

Left unsaid by the LV Sun is the fact that private industry would not finance nuclear energy plants on a bet. It wants the public to pay for building the plants, and then it will take care of the profits from there.

Left unsaid by the LV Sun is the fact that only a small minority of Nevada residents support the establishment of a waste depository at Yucca Mountain. However, if the people of New York want to establish a repository a half mile below the Indian Point plant to put their waste in, the people of Nevada will probably voice no strong objection. Also, if they want to shut down the plant, Nevadan's will probably have the same reaction.

Left unsaid by the LV Sun is the fact that there is a difference between funding and FUNDING. During the Clinton administration the project was not shut down, but it received only "funding," i.e., luke-warm support. During the Bush administration, the project received FUNDING, and the time-table for establishing the dump was significantly advanced. This despite Bush's pledge to be guided only by the science and the known scientific fraud engaged in by the proponents of the dump.

Left unsaid, coltakashi, is that without the flashy lights of Las Vegas, millions of tourists would not come here annually, and hundreds of thousands of jobs would be lost. While I may agree with you on the water issue and decry the influence that the gaming interests have in Nevada politics, if people want to enjoy the benefits of a 24-hour gaming culture, it is not up to you or me to deny it to them. Unlike yourself, Nevadan's are not being hypocritical in fighting a nuclear waste dump that could well destroy their economy, and result in death in centuries to come of far more that one Nevadan in a million.
Unlike the sleazeballs that just want to make a buck and the ones conducting the "scientific" studies of Yucca Mountain for the Department of Energy, we are concerned about the safety of Nevadans for millions of years to come.

If we had not wasted the billions of dollars for the past three decades or so paying corporate welfare to the oil, coal and nuclear industries, we would have had ample funds to invest in alternative resources and we would not be dependent on foreign oil today. But the energy barons wanted a bigger and bigger cut, always fighting against any environmental restrictions on how they produced energy. So don't blame present oil prices on the democrats.

We've heard all of the phony representations from the fossil fuel industries about their being "environmentally friendly" and they don't ring true. Each has caused substantial environmental harm in the recent past.

Trying to drill our way out of this crisis is a false solution whose benefits, if any, will be long delayed and minimal when and if it does arrive. If you look more than 5 minutes into the future (a real challenge for neocons), the actions that will place us in the best position are those described by lrooff, above. It may cut into the profits of Bush and Cheney and their buddies, but the nation will profit instead.
