Put all government employees on fixed salaries. No overtime! That will save millions and will not hurt services!
Unions are what has killed GM,Ford and Chrysler.
Break the unions. They are employing illegal immigrates also. Call ICE
Simple solution.
Since the union will not make any concessions, lay off union employees. There is plenty of room for cuts in the over staffed administration and maintenance departments. Cutting electives would also help.
This is a great opportunity to go back to the basics of education. Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Maybe, more time in the classrooms and less time with the entertainment will change our students test scores.
I like this comment in resopnse to an article in the RJ about the 3% paycut
There is a huge difference between a 3% pay cut for employees that are funded by the non-government tax dollars, and a 3% tax increase. The 3% pay cut lowers the total amount of salaries of the government employees, which in return lowers the tax burden on the non-government taxpayers. Raising taxes by 3% hits the non-government taxpayers. We would be paying for the increase in taxes on our income and yours, since all of your paycheck comes from the non-government taxpayers! Take the pay cut or be laid off. I prefer downsizing the government. Make major across the board administration job cuts in all government departments, city, county, state and federal. Stop all overtime pay is another fix. This will ruffle a lot of feathers, but the economy is getting worse and since all non-government businesses are having to make cuts in salaries, hours, jobs and expenses, all governments should have to do the same. When the economy fell, government should have making those cuts to reduce taxes.

I have worked on cars for over 40 yrs. I agree that Ford, GM and Chrysler have built some great vehicles, but they have also built some crappy vehicles. No one has can say that they have not built some great and dependable vehicles in the past. Currently, the list is limited.
The union is the main reason for their failure and it is not taxpayer responsibility to bail them out. The UAW has millions, and if they wanted to help, they could make some long needed cuts in benefits. Why should the taxpayers bail them out when the union workers refuse to take cuts in their over inflated benefits? They have better benefits than government employees and that should say it all. Gross abuse by the big three and the government
